This armyworm invasion is unlike anything we have seen before, they are literally EVERYWHERE.
Two important questions in regards to armyworms have come up over the last few days.
First, is there any preventative for armyworms?
Yes and no. It is very hard to prevent them long term on a year to year basis because the timeframe in which they emerge can vary drastically. You have to wait for them to emerge it effectively treat them.
However, if you put down a bifenthrin product you will have at least a 2-3 week residual, which is well past the armyworm lifespan.
So if you DON’T have armyworms now, you CAN put down a bifenthrin application and that will keep them from invading your lawn.
Secondly, what if the damage has already been done?
The good news is that armyworms do not attack root systems, they only go after foliage or the actual blades of grass. This means that your lawn will recover from armyworm damage. It will take some time, it might even be next spring before it recovers, and it is certainly going to look bad in the mean time…but it WILL recover nonetheless.
We have completely postponed all of our regular application to strictly deal with this armyworm invasion, so if you need any help at all or have questions, let us know!
