6 Spring Tips for Lawn Care in Arlington

The debut of the warm season is always a reason for joy and enthusiasm, especially for home owners who can’t wait to show off their beautiful lawn. But in order to get yours into tip top shape for the upcoming outdoor days, there’s a bit of spring preparations you need to complete, so that you give it the best start possible. Here are the steps you need to take:

1. Lightly rake

You can start by giving your lawn a light rake to free it of winter debris and to lift up the matted old grass so the sun can properly dry it and reach the soil underneath. Don’t do it too harshly or you might scratch and damage the soil; give it some time to defrost completely before any firm action.

2. Aerate

If you live in Texas, you’ve probably noticed how impressively beautiful the lawns in Arlington and Kennedale and around tend to be. The secret is aerating: talk to your lawn care service provider about core aeration. This technique allows nutrients to better penetrate the soil’s layers and stimulates the root growth, so it prepares your soil for sprouting a truly vigorous lawn.

3. De-thatch

The only way you’ll get your lawn’s growth kick-started is to get rid of all toxic build-up first. That toxic build-up that accumulates over the cold season is called thatch and it really needs to go if you want your soil to taste the sunlight and the nutrients you have in store for it. Hire a professional service provider for a proper dethatching and pat yourself on the back for it.

4. Now is the time to fertilize

After clearing up the soil, it’s the perfect time to apply your customized cocktail of fertilizing substances and also perhaps some pre-emergent weed control. That’s because not only is there no grass now to hinder the absorption of these substances into the soil, but it’s also when the soil needs them most if it’s going to grow a strong turf. Speak to your lawn maintenance company about what the best options for your lawn are and decide together what to apply and where.

5. Mowing

Allow the grass to grow a few inches from the ground, and then cut it early and as low as possible (just for the first mow of the season). This way you will jumpstart the lawn’s regeneration properties. For subsequent cuts, never mow more than one third of the total grass height. Consult with your service provider about the best way to cut as well.

6. Test the soil

Spring is the perfect time to find out more about your soil’s particularities and needs, so you know what kind of nutrients and care to provide it with later. Talk to your maintenance company and schedule some lab tests a.s.a.p.
